Virtual Graphic Facilitation
A Picture Says at Least a Thousand Words
What is Virtual Graphic Facilitation?
It’s taking information that is shared during a webcast or other live online event — from group discussion, to the presenter’s ideas, to slides, to research data — and transforming it into something visual, organized and accessible. It’s finding the right mixture of words, illustration and design to capture a subject and make it memorable. Moreover, it unfolds in real time, adding an element of engagement, fun and anticipation that few other online experiences can offer.
LearningTimes is the first to bring professional graphic illustrators and facilitators to the real-time virtual environment. Recognizing the power of scribing at face-to-face events, we developed a series of tools and strategies for incorporating the artform into a range of synchronous venues. The response has been tremendous.
Who is Using It?
Leading organizations have begun to enjoy the power of the LearningTimes Virtual Graphic Facilitation (VGF) service during their online events. Here are just a few examples:
LearningTimes produces online conferences for the Smithsonian Institution. As part of their commitment to innovation and offering programs that appeal to a range of learning styles, the Smithsonian Education team requested the VGF service for the Smithsonian Online Conference on Problem Solving. As museum curators, researchers and educators conducted their interactive live online sessions, the LearningTimes VGF team was on hand to capture the information and dialogue in the form of an illustration that each participant was able to save and enjoy for future reference. Teachers in attendance online reported using the drawings of each session to prompt follow-up discussions and kick off projects with their students.
Jossey-Bass, an Imprint of John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
LearningTimes has a successful partnership with leading publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc., a valued source of information and understanding for more than 200 years. Together we produce events that bring professionals together with authors to learn together in community through online conferences, events and podcasts. Wiley recently began using the LearningTimes VGF service to enhance the Jossey-Bass Department Chair Online Institute, a series of live online seminars. “The drawing was great,” commented one participant. “I loved that everyone left with a souvenir!”
International Online Conference
The nature and structure of the International Online Conference for Teaching and Learning — now in its ninth year — is the ideal venue to use Virtual Graphic Facilitation (VGF). One of our professional illustrators captures, organizes and interprets ideas shared by keynote presenters and session participants. All attendees see the drawing take shape and use it to track how the discussion points fit together. The magic happens as the big picture emerges from the sum of all the parts. Participants leave with a digital copy of this useful record of the collaboration.
