Annual 3-day online event and ongoing community based on Jossey-Bass Online Teaching & Learning guides.
The Online Teaching & Learning (OTL) Conference and Community is based on popular Jossey-Bass Online Teaching & Learning guide books. The program includes an annual 3-day event — live online — and an ongoing community that brings together education professionals worldwide to exchange ideas, resources, and best practices that improve online education.
Now in its fourth year, OTL has brought together thousands of education professionals to interact online around timely topics, expertly guided by some of the leading minds in the online learning world. As a special bonus, those who participate in the online conference each receive their choice of three books — making OTL one of the most interactive, practical and useful events of the year.
In 2006, Jossey-Bass introduced a series of Online Teaching & Learning guide books to provide practical resources focused on areas and issues educators confront when delivering courses over the Internet. Creating a live online learning experience was the perfect way to highlight these resources, and contribute to the community.
There are more new online educators facing more new online students every semester. While the Jossey-Bass guides are a tremendous resource for instructors and administrators, the books only begin to tap into the full experience and knowledge of the authors – many of whom add to their expertise daily. Furthermore, readers of the OTL guide books represent a vast and diverse community of practitioners, each with skills and ideas to share with their colleagues.
Jossey-Bass was looking for a way to deepen the relationship they have with professionals in higher education, provide ongoing access to the authors and a growing community of readers, and learn first-hand what topics future guides should address. Guide authors Rena Palloff, Keith Pratt, and Jonathan Finkelstein came up with the solution that answered all three areas.
Solution: Online Conference
LearningTimes and Jossey-Bass produced the first “Online Teaching & Learning Conference” in the fall of 2007. The response was amazing, with over 400 sites attending the 3-day event held entirely over the Internet. Each author facilitated a live interactive webcast that engaged participants and shed new light on each topic. Audience feedback was overwhelmingly positive – and Jossey-Bass distributed over 1200 books to attendees.
The online program, like the guide book series itself, has grown each year. Authors continue to offer new information that builds on their books; educators and administrators bring new challenges to discuss with colleagues; and new collaborative relationships are formed.
Solution: Online Community
In 2010 Jossey-Bass introduced the Online Teaching & Learning Community. This unique site answers the call from OTL attendees to collaborate, network and learn from the experts and each other year-round. The OTL community brings together education professionals worldwide to exchange ideas, resources, and best practices that improve online education.
It features podcasts, tips, and discussions and is facilitated by a team of leading authors and online learning experts. The OTL community e-newsletter delivers the latest Online Teaching and Learning tips, podcasts and events.
Through a partnership with LearningTimes, Jossey-Bass developed new ways to engage with their target audience and distribute thousands of books through online activities. This model has now been replicated with Wiley books and journals in the areas of Leadership and Mental Health, among others.
The Online Teaching & Learning Conference and Community have brought together thousands of education professionals to interact, collaborate and learn together online. Participants have grown their desk reference libraries with OTL guide books, while expanding their professional network and their repertoire of online teaching practices.
